Great Room {Mini Makeover}: New Paint + New Color Palette

Yep, I’m giving my great room a mini-makeover. I needed to paint: something lighter, brighter and desaturated since I’m starting to add a lot more COLOR in the room. Whelp…

Hee, hee. Can you tell I’m excited?

This is a WORK IN PROGRESS,
but I couldn’t wait to show you the difference a coat of paint can make.
So, what do you think?

And if you can’t seem to remember, this is what it was like before…

Yeah, not bad. It was just too yellow for my taste and it made the room seem really dark. The color on the walls seemed to blend with the color of the couches. I  also wanted to get rid of the traditional decor and and back in some of my eclectic style.

I’m an artist ya know… I’ve got a funky side.

I see so many homes on Pinterest and in the blogging world that consist of whites and neutrals. Beautiful, bright, clean, crisp open spaces!

But I wasn’t ready to throw white and neutrals out the window completely. Since I was going to add bold accent decor throughout, I needed a nice {almost white} base color for the walls. I chose the color Drifting Dune from Olympic in an eggshell finish.

I purchased the peacock blue curtains and colorful accent pillows from Pier 1 Imports. LOVE ’em!

We also bought the new brown flowered rug from Lowe’s to tie the colors together. Found that puppy while shopping for the paint and it’s PERFECT.

I moved the loveseat that was in front of our large great room window to the corner of the room. So much more natural light in the space!

What do I love most about this room?
I’m actually using furniture and projects that I created!

And this black end table? Yep, another fabulous transformation from last summer.

And of course one of my favorites… the black surname table that I created using vinyl lettering is now the perfect side table.

Here’s the newly painted hallway. Quite stark at the moment. I still need to find some new sconces to replace the ones my hubby broke. And maybe someday a gallery wall.

And finally here’s the dining room. Right now this room could use some love, but at least the fresh coat of paint and new curtains are a start. I would LOVE to find some cool slipcovers for the two end chairs.

OH, and I’m going to PAINT MY PIANO! Yes, I’ve been talking about this for awhile now, but I had to get the rest of the colors in place first so I could make an educated choice. See it there on the right side of my dining room? I was thinking peacock blue at first.

So, WHAT COLOR ARE YOU THINKING?

OK, I guess that’s it for now. Sorry for the looooong ramble and photo overload.

I just want to finish this post off by saying BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND YOUR DESIGN PREFERENCE. Don’t conform to a color or style just because everyone else is doing it. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. My home has everything… from modern to traditional to country to eclectic to rustic. So guess what?

Nuff said.

It looks great!!! Your taste is very similar to mine, I like color too. Our great room and kitchen are warm colors, not exactly the trend these days, but it works for us and the furniture that we currently have. Hopefully one day will change it! I am trying to incorporate more modern accessories until then.

Totally off topic but I love your craft room!!!! Where did you get that printable? Love it!!!

Thanks Karen! I actually got both printables for my craft room for FREE online! The “home” poster is from Eighteen25 blog: http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2011/05/filler-print.html The vintage girl smoking poster is from a free download from Far Far Hill: http://farfarhill.blogspot.com/p/vintage-freebies.html

      Hope that helps!!

Love the new paint color! I agree, it’s easy to get wrapped up in design trends, but it is so important to stay true to yourself! Great reminder!

That looks amazing! A very great change indeed, it just makes everything pop that much more! I really love all the accent colours also. I’m quite intrigued to see how the painted piano turns out! That is a brave task to undertake! I think the peacock could look amazing, although not too sure how it would tie in with the red wall….but I do see you have a peacock curtain, and maybe a slipcover that incorporates that colour as well and perhaps some yellow or orange? It could really tie it all in! Oooh maybe an inka style fabric! 😀

    • howtonestforless says

      at

I’m lovin’ the addition of yellow or orange in a slipcover! Maybe that will help balance out the peacock blue in the piano. I can’t wait to get started! Thanks for visiting Pamela!
