Hi, I’m Chrissy from The Outlaw Mom!

I’m so thrilled to be participating in the Valentine’s Day Craft Series and to be sharing this recipe for Stained Glass Heart Cookies with you!

This recipe is really simple and you’ll end up with super fabulous cookies to share with your friends and loved ones this Valentine’s Day. (Or you can eat them by yourself, like I did with my entire first batch)!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 6-8 oz Jolly Rancher hard candies (or substitute your favorite hard candy)

Equipment

  • Large and small heart-shaped cookie cutters (or a sharp knife)
  • Silpat baking pad (or parchment or waxed paper)
  • Baking sheet

Recipe

(adapted from Gourmet’s recipe for Stained Glass Teardrops)

First, make your cookie dough – which needs to be chilled for at least 2 hours.

  • In a small bowl, whisk the salt and flour together.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Then, beat in the egg and vanilla.
  • Add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture and mix at low speed until just combined.
  • Form the dough into 3 equal disks and individually wrap and chill the disks until firm.

Once your dough is ready, it’s only a few simple steps to gorgeous Valentine’s Day cookies! It doesn’t make a difference whether you completely pulverize the candy or use larger chips. It will all melt together during the baking process.

Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick on a well-floured surface one disk at a time.

Don’t forget (like I did the first time around) to use a Silpat pad, parchment paper, or waxed paper or it will be impossible to get the melted candy off of your baking sheet! If you don’t use a cookie cutter for the cutout, try to smooth the edges or the color of the melted candies will bleed into any jagged edges.

Try to keep the crushed candy within the cutout borders if you want an absolutely pristine look, otherwise you’ll end up with tiny sprinkles of color on your cookie or the color may overflow. (Not necessarily a bad thing)!

Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 2½ cups all purpose flour
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Stained Glass Filling

  • 6-8 oz Jolly Rancher hard candies (or substitute your favorite hard candies)

Instructions

For the cookie dough:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk the salt and flour together.

  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy.

  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla.

  4. Add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture and mix at low speed until just combined.

  5. Form the dough into 3 equal disks and individually wrap and chill the disks until firm.

  6. Chill in fridge for 2 hours.

For the stained glass centers:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.

  2. Crush up your candies. It doesn't matter how small because it will all melt together during the baking process.

  3. Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick on a well-floured surface one disk at a time.

  4. Don't forget to use a silicone baking mat, parchment paper, or waxed paper or it will be impossible to get the melted candy off of your baking sheet. If you don't use a cookie cutter for the cutout, try to smooth the edges or the color of the melted candies will bleed into any jagged edges.

  5. Try to keep the crushed candy within the cutout borders if you want an absolutely pristine look, otherwise you'll end up with tiny sprinkles of color on your cookie or the color may overflow.

  6. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.

Thanks so much for having me, Erin! Hope you all have a sweet Valentine’s Day!

I was wondering how long to bake the cookies and how high the oven temp needs to be. Thanks

10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Good catch Lindsey! Thanks 🙂

Details, details 🙂 Thanks for responding, Erin! Don’t leave them in too much longer after their just getting golden or they’ll burn and so will the candy centers. They’ll taste okay, but the colors will change (darken) and obviously, won’t be as tasty or pretty.

That would be “they’re,” not “their” 🙂
