AND SO IT BEGINS: Painting My Kitchen Cabinets

Well, it’s official. I’ve finally started my kitchen cabinet makeover. Monday night we took down all of the cabinet doors in preparation for a long awaited transformation.

In case you don’t remember what my kitchen looked like just a few short days ago, here’s my old kitchen… complete with a red wall.

We chose the plain builder grade cabinets when we built this home 6 years ago due to the fact that we couldn’t afford much else. The orange glow I just couldn’t get over.

So here we are… removing all cabinet doors.
Looking better already, right?

Yeah, don’t mind the mess in my cabinets.

First thing I did was remove all hardware and place into a separate plastic bag clearly marking which door it belongs to.

Then I made sure to put a sticky note on the cabinet door to match.

Doesn’t seem like too many cabinet doors, right? Except each stack has 2 doors. And this doesn’t even include all of the drawers. Oh my, what did I get myself into?

I covered the dining room table in a dropcloth and started to clean all of the cabinets last night with some heavy duty degreaser. I also sanded them in preparation for my primer.

Yep, this is going to be a long haul. As you probably know I have my normal office day job so can only get to this at night (expect a lot of dark photos like the one above during this process).

Plus it’s Shark Week and I’m having trouble getting stuff done because I keep getting distracted… oopsies.

And in case you missed it, check out my Kitchen Makeover Plan.
Yeah yeah, I wrote it over 2 months ago. At least I painted over the red wall thus far!

I get my best work done when I know I shouldn’t be tackling it..does that make sense? lol It is going to be a long haul, but the end result will be well worth it! I found a great site via Pinterest {gotta love Pinterest for great finds!} that is an amazing hardware site with great prices. I ordered 6 drawer pulls from them and they were inexpensive, quality and had quick shipping. So if you are thinking about changing the hardware out as well, you might want to see what they have {I am NOT affiliated with them, I just love a good source} Leevalley.com Good luck!

    Get it girl!

The more I think about it, the more I want to go down to amateur night at “Dancers”, make some fast cash, and hire someone to paint our kitchen cabinets for us. But then I remember that I have dignity.

It took me forever to write up my kitchen cupboard painting post. I think the task of painting them sucks up any creative energy, and writing about it just causes FLASH BACKS..lol!!! BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT!…
Can’t wait to see the finished product.
    Hugs,

Ha, thanks Karin! I just keep counting how many nights this is going to take me and I start to whimper a bit. I just have to keep telling myself “it will all be worth it, it will all be worth it.”

It took a while to convince my husband that it wouldn’t be that hard…and it wasn’t!!! I hated the oak cabinets that everyone said were so beautiful…but they didn’t have to look at them. It was a dark kitchen anyway! I love love love my new white cabinets. And we saved money by just repainting our handles, using the “hammered nickel spray paint. SO MUCH BETTER!!!

Yay Annette!!! So glad to hear that it worked out for you. Such a difference, right? And love the idea of repainting the handles!!
