While at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago I spotted this handmade storage table with cool moldings. It was $20 and I really couldn’t think of a good use for it. But after seeing it go unsold for about a week, I finally had to snatch it up on 50% off furniture day! For only $10, I could turn anything into something.
First thought: use some chalk paint to give this “new” table a makeover into a retro style storage cabinet. So here’s the before… and after! Here’s how I transformed this unique find!
One cool thing about this 2x2ft table is the top comes off to reveal storage: perfect for toys, blankets or in my case, craft room supplies! The front panel was just a plain piece of canvas secured with staples and thumb tacks. I took off the panel and started with a fresh coat of paint on the base of the table.
My paint choice: Annie Sloan’s chalk paint in Versailles. Next I painted the moldings at the top and bottom in Old White.
Once the paint was dry, I decided to paint chevron stripes around the entire base. For my inspiration, I used A Step in the Journey’s chevron tutorial that I featured on my site a couple of weeks ago. You can see Laura Beth featured on my site here!
I measured, taped and painted the stripes using Annie Sloan’s Country Grey chalk paint. At first the paint difference from the Country Grey to Versailles was extremely subtle, but once it dried it looked a little better!
To really let the colors pop and to give the table a retro feel, I used Annie Sloan’s dark and clear wax around the entire table. It’s amazing how the waxes really add depth and detail to the paint!
Now for the front insert that was once upon a time just a flimsy piece of canvas… I had an idea to make an artistic collage since this table is going in my {someday} craft room. I found some cool scrapbook paper and decals from Michael’s and only spent a total of $8 for all my supplies!
I pieced together all of the graphics and used Mod Podge to stick it all together. After a couple of coats and letting it fully dry I used liquid nails to attach the new retro-inspired homemade poster to a piece of plywood that my hubby cut for me.
A couple of finishing nails to attach the board to the inside of the table and it’s complete! Total costs: $10 for the table, $8 for the scrapbook paper and decals: $18 total! I already had the Annie Sloan chalk paint and wax, Mod Podge, paintbrushes, etc. on hand in my craft closet.
