These peppermint mocha gooey butter cookie recipe is the perfect way to start your holidays!

A little over a year ago I shared with you guys my recipe for one of my favorite St. Louis traditions, Gooey Butter Cookies. That recipe was a huge hit for me over the past few years, pinned over 500,000 times! Well now I’m about to show you guys my holiday twist on an old classic… Peppermint Mocha Gooey Butter Cookie Recipe. I’m also giving you the recipe for just plain chocolate gooey butter cookies so follow below!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 devils food cake mix box
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar

Cake mix, cane sugar, vanilla, butter, eggs, and cream cheese on the counter.

DIRECTIONS:
Combine butter, cream cheese, egg and vanilla in a bowl and use mixer until light and fluffy.

combining the ingredients in a red bowl with an electric hand held mixer.

Stir in the dry cake mix until the dough becomes thick but smooth. It might seem crumbly at first, but just keep working at it until it’s smooth.

Pour powdered sugar into a separate bowl, set aside.

Scoop a spoonful of the cookie dough and roll into a ball, then dip in the powdered sugar until fully covered. If you want easier dough to work with for rolling, chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

The batter rolled into balls and powdered sugar on a baking sheet.

Place cookie balls on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.

Now you can stop here if you just want plain chocolate gooey butter cookies. Ain’t nothing wrong with that. But if you want to take it up a notch, especially for the holiday season, then I would highly suggest the peppermint icing!

FROSTING INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp mint extract
  • 1/4 cup crushed peppermint

Frosting ingredients on the counter.

FROSTING DIRECTIONS:
In a small bowl combine all ingredients except peppermint candy. Beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Spread over cookies and sprinkle with peppermint candy.

You might want to play around with the mint extract depending on how “pepperminty” you want your frosting.

A bit of frosting on the cookies with a peppermint piece on top.

And if you’re lazy sometimes like me, just buy vanilla pre-made frosting and add a splash of mint extract to it!

Trust me, if you liked my plain gooey butter cookies,
you’ll LOVE this Peppermint Mocha Gooey Butter Cookie Recipe.
We made a huge plate of these at Thanksgiving and they were a huge hit!
(recipe yields about 3 dozen small cookies)
These are perfect for a cookie exchange too.

HOPE YOU ENJOY!
